The Woman of Distinction Award recognizes alumnae who exhibit excellence and extraordinary leadership in their professions and careers or in service to their communities. Nominees should be widely recognized within their field of service to be considered for this award. Any Alpha Xi Delta alumna in good standing is eligible to receive this award and do not have to be current members of an organized alumnae association. Nominations can be made by:

Women of Distinction award recipients will be honored at Alpha Xi Delta’s 2025 National Convention in Austin, Texas. Visit https://bit.ly/WOD2025 to fill out the nomination form.

maxine Burton, Georgia '71
2023 woman of distinction
Founder of burton + BURTON®, the world’s largest distributor of balloons and coordinating gift products. Her company is a nationally certified as a Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) by the WBENC, a leading non-profit dedicated to supporting women-owned business. Maxine is a philanthropist and a strong supporter of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Georgia 4-H.
anne stone, Virginia '87
2023 woman of distinction
Anne oversees research in the Stone Lab at Arizona State University which focuses on three main themes. These themes are Native American population history, the evolutionary history of the Great Apes, and the understanding the co-evolutionary history of mycobacteria.
Sarah Lerner, Florida Atlantic '98
2019 woman of distinction
An English and journalism teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Sarah kept 15 students safe in her classroom on February 14, 2018 while a gunman opened fire at the school, killing 17 people and wounding 14 others. Sarah edited and published a 192-page book, Parkland Speaks, that features Parkland students’ writing about that day.
Megan yunn, Marietta ‘03
2019 woman of distinction
Megan launched the nonprofit organization Beverly’s Birthdays in 2012 to provide meaningful birthday celebrations for children experiencing homelessness and families in need. Today, Bevery’s Birthdays is now Beverly’s PGH and has three divisions, birthdays, babies, and basic care, to provide compassionate support to families in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
